Do you ever have that happen where...

You make a suggestion to someone. He wants to do it a different way. His way is fine with you.

But he makes a statement to the effect that he thinks your way is really dumb.

So in order to make sure he doesn't think you're a complete moron, you explain what you were thinking.

But since you go through this effort to explain, he thinks you're trying to state your case in order to convince him to do it your way. And therefore are a pushy jerk.

No. I already agreed to do it your way. I was just sayin'.

It's not usually a huge deal, but it happens a lot and it's frustrating.

Usually people get defensive.

I normally allow the customer to get themselves into a fix, then we can discuss how they got there and why my idea would have worked in the first place...

my favorite example was discussing how to patch a satellite while in flight. The customer didn't want to, 6 years ago. One month before "delivery" they called to ask me.. "what would you suggest we do about patching while in flight?" I suggested... "2 ways - one - redesign everything so you can do patches, and two - go back six years, and design in a method..."

It's typical in the industry. Big egos, that is!

:-) You're welcome! The rovers are pretty cool, and the whole team is very proud of their accomplishments. And of all the reasons that motivate NASA folks, public involvment and inspiring the public to learn about space / science / etc, is about the biggest reasone we do what we do. So.. thank you for the feedback!

i believe that exploration of and expansion into space is the only hope for the long term survival of the human species. that makes you guys one of the most underappreciated of government programs.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: you can't cut both protection for the environment and the space program.

there are so many times, i just want to excuse myself and say i'm going to delete the conversation that just took place. one of my well-known syndromes is foot-in-mouth or trying to fix a conversation that i can't make sense of in the first place.

lol

i would hate that too.
i also hate when you say something and you're totally misunderstood & then the person suggests exactly what you were just saying & then they act like they came up with it.
annoying.

But then there's when your suggestion is misunderstood, but it works, and they tell you what a good idea you had. :-D
