This is the viewing platform...

...where we went to watch the clouds being made.

They happened to have manatees. See the two bright reflections in the water, above? There are four manatees near those spots.

Under the platform was this young manatee. It was about two years old.

This was the Manatee Viewing Center at the Big Bend Power Station.

It was just brought to my attention that I never posted pictures from our visit to Tampa.
On Saturday afternoon we visited historic Ybor City. It was a cigar town, back in the day. Later it was pretty decrepit. Now it's been cleaned up. It's mostly about clubs, bars and cigars.

( it's not all cars... )

spring break
Apr. 9th, 2013 11:19 pmCindy and I went to Florida this weekend. We visited some old (pre-LJ) online friends of hers. Great people. So nice!
After we landed, they took us around to see Ybor City and dinner at a great seafood place, The Colonnade. On Sunday, we saw manatees, the The Florida Aquarium, and an early dinner at the historic Columbia in Ybor City. Then we went out to Indian Rocks Beach on the Gulf, before driving down the coast a bit the crossing over to St. Petersburg, where we had some drinks at a pub. Monday morning, they took us to a nearby park, where we saw the springs, and sat by the side of the river for a bit.
The weather was perfect - upper seventies and mostly sunny. Not very humid, and no bugs. It had been in the forties only the week before. It was a really relaxing weekend.

Animal Kingdom
Feb. 3rd, 2010 11:56 pmA couple of weeks ago, Cyn and I went to Disney, in Florida. I've finally gotten around to finishing my photos, so here are a few of them.
On friday afternoon, while Cyn was at her conference, I scouted out the wilds of Africa and Asia, so I knew the best places to take her on saturday. This was Animal Kingdom, the newest Disney park, just over ten years old. It's a zoo-slash-theme park. I assume they treat their animals as well as any good zoo, and the enclosures seem to be better than most. The gorilla pens, for example, were very impressive. Hills, streams, woods. They two small tribes of gorillas.

They still seemed kinda bored. We saw this one through the glass on the side of her pen that was less natural looking.
