When you first open up Google Earth, the earth rotates around to show North America. If you push the button to zoom in all the way, without spinning the globe at all, it zooms in to Lawrence Kansas. Right in the middle of the city, in the hilly area where the university is.

I don't think many of you will find that interesting.

I found Mount Everest and K2. I had to check the altitude of pretty much every mountain in the Himalays, because you have to get in close before they'll show you the names, and sometimes you just see the local names.

I'd always thought that the two mountains were near each other. Everest is to the east of Khatmandu (which is to the Northeast of India), while K2 is in the north of Pakistan.

And the elevations given by Google Earth are not exact. In some cases, they are off by a couple thousand feet.

Google Earth is now available for Macs.

Have you seen this program? If not, download it (if you can - not for Macs, yet). It's amazing what detail they show in their satellite views. But the real kicker is that it shows the terrain in 3d. You can zoom around in the mountains. Or turn the 3d buildings on and zoom around Manhattan. I retraced most of where we went on our trip in Novemeber. I traced the whole way from LAX to the top of Mt. Wilson. It was pretty wild to learn what was just over the ridge from where we were.

Just for kicks, here are some images I took from Google Earth, alongside pictures I took when I was there.
