My desktop and one of my laptops still have ME. My newer laptop has XP. I think the big differences are the amount of RAM needed and the MHZ of your computer. If it's not up to it, you probably shouldn't try to upgrade.
At least, that's my impression. But I'm no expert by any means. Marwalker would be a better person to ask.
Had no problems updating to XP from ME at all. Done it on several machines including a baby 500mhz. Lost no files either, though I did do back ups first.
XP breaks the mold. They had Windows CE. And they came out with ME, and NT, all at different times. If you install CE, ME, NT in the same computer, you end up with CEMENT...
On the serious side, if you're just looking at XP home eddition vs ME, there are some good enhancements on the XP side, but unless you're having problems with ME or want some software that won't work on ME, if ME is working, I'd be a bit resistant to moving to XP. XP will soak up more RAM, more CPU cycles, and more of your hard drive. If you've got plenty of space and CPU to spare, then go for it.
I've got XP pro on 4 computers I use, Linux on 2, and Solaris on 3 - of all of it, I like the Solaris the best, but that's not exactly an OS for home use.
Note: if you're planning on installing a new disk drive on the ME machine (soon to be XP), you might want to install the new drive first. I've been having a hell of a time upgrading a friends system with a new disk, because XP isn't playing nicely (not even with any of the hi-tech copy programs i have).
I'd reccomend doing a complete de-frag and chkdisk first. For that I'd suggest something like Diskeeper boot-time defrag (set to defrag MFTs and paging area).
I need to check on the memory required to run it. I definitely want to upgrade. Not only because of continual nagging problems with ME, but so I can network our two computers more easily.
