I'm interested in buying a DVD player. I'm curious about formats, though. I've heard rumors of DVD formatted audio. Super Audio or DVD-A. Anything else? Can you get discs in these formats? Do players play either kind? I don't really know the questions to ask.

I went to an audio store on saturday to ask, and maybe buy one, but the salesman didn't seem too interested in talking to me.

You MIGHT be able to find some insights (or links to insights) at www.enjoythemusic.com....

Maybe he didn't know much, just worked there.

This is a coincidence. After a conversation yesterday I realized I don't really know ANYTHING about DVDs. As I was making the bed this morning I was thinking that maybe I would go on Internet and at least learn "Just what is a DVD and what can a person do with it?" I'm not planning to buy a player--just don't want to be hopelessly "out of it".

You may be forced to learn about DVD's because it looks like VHS tapes are being phased out. I'm not sure yet how the average person "tapes" a show to watch later with DVD technology. Already the players and movies are as cheap as VHS.

I suspect you're right. It's like audio tapes. You can still get them, and buy things to play them on, but CDs are the norm.

As you told me recently, you had trouble buying a record player when you wanted one--the young salesperson didn't know what it was. I wonder how long it will take for video tapes to go from the "CDs are the norm but tapes are still available" stage to "You can't play a video tape unless you have an old VCR" stage.

The wife of a guy at work bought a VCR recently to store in the attic for when their current one dies.

I was thinking that might be a good plan. I'm sure I'll never get all my tapes transferred to DVD. And if I did, how long would *that* fad last?

He seemed like an owner. And one who thought he had more important things to do.

And it also bugged me because I couldn't just browse around the store, since I didn't know what anything was. They had these listening rooms that seemed to be set up for salespeople to demonstrate.
