I get uncomfortable when people start saying things like, "when the war starts..." First of all, I don't think the war *was* a foregone conclusion. I think Bush & Co. were waiting for Saddam to fuck up the weapons inspection, even if the had to push him to get that to happen. So what does that mean? War was likely but not for certain. What does that have to do with the cirent situation? Is war a certainty? I don't know yet. I doubt it, but I can't say for sure. So why does it bother me that people talk like it is? Not because of the inaccuracy.

It's because Bush is still trying to win people over. And the more that people talk like it *will* happen, the more people become resigned to the fact. Pretty soon every one is acting like, "oh yeah, it's gonna happen. Go ahead."

Resist! Think!

I know...it's like it's already begun!

I think as commander in chief-select, Shrub oughta be over there leading the troops....if it COMES down to war...

That's the operative word for ANY coverage of the possible conflict....

All along Bush and (sadly) Blair too have been saying that they know the weapons are there, and they've been warmongering on that basis. But suppose that the weapons inspectors find nothing. Then what will they do? They can either attack the report of the weapons inspectors, say they have the intelligence that the weapons are there, and go to war anyway, or what? Sit around looking sheepish?

Yeah, but on the other hand, if you decide you have to give Hussein some kind of threat so he quits making weapons of mass destruction, you have to make it look credible. I'm hoping that will be his excuse to back down. "We had to be ready in case of the discovery of a weapons program."

I hope you're right. My gut feeling is that war's not inevitable, but that Bush will probably do something short of war.

people must realize that war is much more than watching the coverage on CNN......any war is going to come home to them......and it will not be pretty.....

Yep. That's pretty much what I've been saying since 9-11-01.

it's been the case for a long time.....CNN's coverage in the gulf war made it appear to the casual TV viewer that the US military is invincible......

7 attacks in the first 13 days of the year and thousands of americans on the borders doesn't sound like when war STARTS but when they ADMIT it has already begun

Good point.

But then the point of the war that they've been pushing is to dethrone Hussein, and when they start that, it's going to be big.

yeah i know it can get much bigger.

my point is just that i'm so sick of how washington plays word games with EVERYTHING to change the meaning of what's really happening

Yeah, like the "war on terrorism." Some war.
