You may have noticed an icon next to comments in your journal, that have an eye with a line though it. This is for screening comments.

You now have a setting on your personal info page that you can use to ensure that comments made to your posts don't appear to the general public until you say so.

You can configure your account to "screen" anonymous comments, non-friend comments, or all comments. Those comments are only visible to you initially, and only after you explicitly view them by clicking the "Screen post" in your comments page. If the comment is good, you can click the eye icon and everyone will be able to see it. If it's a harassing comment, you can either delete it or leave it unscreened. You can also click the eye with a red slash through it to turn a visible comment into a screen comment.

i suppose one could also ask a friend to keep ones comment private if the friend had that option enabled. neat!

Ah! I know a person who could use that feature. She's afraid to comment without filters on an original post because of a stalker. If I knew she wanted all her comments secret, then I could do her that favor without compromising the freedom of my journal.

you'd have to screen all your comments to do her the favor, though.

Oh...pooo :(

I hope I never have to use it. I don't get harrassed in my journal...yet...

Why would I want to make a harrassing comment invisible rather than just deleting it? Actually I'm more likely to leave harrassing comments out there so other people can see what a jerk so-and-so is being. Maybe I'd feel differently if I was actually faced with it, I guess.

If it was just a little annoying you could leave it up so you could respond to it and not have it mess up your post for everyone else.

Do you know if it's possible to make your journal (or specific entries) viewable only to registered lj users?

I'm pretty sure it isn't. Seems like that would be a pretty popular option, though.

I'm not sure how much good that would do, though. The bio pages will always be public. And anyone who found you would only have to get an LJ to see yourposts.

Well, if some of the posts were open to all, and others open to registered users only, they may never realize they could see more.

Pretty futile attempt at selective privacy, I know.

Yeah, well...

It does seem like a do-able option. Maybe.
