I just got a piece of spam from myself. It was sent from my address to "undisclosed recipients." It has "freekee" in the subject line. It was advertising "America's #1 Rated Computer Certification Training Provider".

How the hell did they do that?

Beats me but I periodically get email addressed to myself from myself as well ;)

Why I would send a credit card application to myself is beyond me.

mmm...

It's a stupid little software program.. that's all~~!

Irritating though!

Hi!

You don't know me... just surfed into your post!

(Please don't mind!!)

(a) Your e-mail programme isn't showing you the full address of the sender. Sometimes addresses are in the format
   "J" <banana@livejournal.com>
and it will just show the J part. Obviously if I send you mail, I can put whatever name I like in.

(b) The sender just faked your e-mail address as the sender's address. If you're using a mail client (e.g. Outlook rather than Hotmail), you have to specify your own e-mail address to appear in the "from" line because the software has no way of knowing. So, you can put in whatever you like.

(c) If you're a dedicated spammer, read up on SMTP and talk directly to your outbound mail server, then you can specify a different "from" address on each piece of spam.

So, e-mail addresses shouldn't be relied on.

It did say, freekee <freekee@juno.com>

Maybe I'll forward it to you, so you can see it.

It's not like I'm really worried about it, it's just odd and I'm curious.

I've just e-mailed you, apparently from your address, but really from my work.

Okay, I'll check when I get home.

I use a mail client (Juno, obviously), and to access it from the 'net screws with my mail viewing, so I only access it at home. I suppose I could bring the client here too, but I haven't so I only get my home mail at home, and my work mail at work.
