If you dump a mess of big black carpenter ants in a pot of boiling water, you only have to add sugar and you have lemonade. (There is a lot of acid in them ants.)
The best way to prepare worms is to put them in a pot of lukewarm water. Then they expel all that dirt.
I won't give you the details on how to gut and skin a rabbit with out a knife or other tools, but I heard how.
Tarantulas are mostly meat, but you should cook them before eating.
If you're going to eat insects, remove the head, wings and legs first.
There is a lot of vitamin C in pine needles. You can get it by making tea with them.

None of this was learned first hand, of course.

I read a book on military training many years ago about how to toughen up soldiers. They used live rabbits and told the soldiers to rip them apart by hand. I never forgot that horrific description and I sometimes tell this story when I hear of a young boy who thinks boot-camp might be cool.

Yeah, it was the Grape Nuts commercial, if I remember correctly. He starts out by talking about eating pine trees and/or other unusual things in nature...and then goes on to talk about Grape Nuts being a natural part of your breakfast, or some such thing.

My brain is getting old and foggy. ;)
