Last night, Paul told us that his little sister had been busted for having a party while her parents were gone. Four bottles of her parents liquor, a bunch of beer. Damage to the liquor cabinet.

Her dad got a list of everyone who was there and called them and their parents.

Her mom took away her car. The one she had saved up all that money for, and was going to be learning to drive on next month when she turned sixteen.

Yeah, she's only fifteen.

I thought the whole thing was pretty damn funny, until that last part. Now it's just stupid.

I don't see the humor in it, either.

First, a 15-year-old certainly shouldn't be drinking, let alone her parents' alcohol, let alone inviting others to share it.

Secondly, these days, such parties can get out of control very quickly. Not only by those that may have been invited, but by uninvited kids (and adults!) just looking for trouble. They can cause far more serious damage than to just the liquor cabinet. When my brother's step-son was a teenager, he and my sister-in-law wouldn't leave him alone in their house at night. *He* was a responsible kid, but that's just not enough any more. He could've invited a few friends over, others could've found out about it, and that would've meant disaster. I think the parents were actually lucky to get a list of everyone at the party.

I tried looking at it objectively....what if the sister was 17 rather than 15. Does that make it funny? No, I still don't see the humor...wrecked property, possibility of lawsuits against Paul's parents, etc.

As much as I don't like to see kids drinking under age and all that, I thought it was part of the job of all teens to do this sort of thing at LEAST once....

Oh sure...I did it and I know my daughter has partyed to some degree. It's their job to rebel, to buck the system, and test their limits.

I remember some underage kids from my high school had a couple of impromtu parties...the first one ended up with someone playing Russian-Roulette with a loaded gun and accidentally shooting themselves. Another party had someone passed out on the floor...and some idiot thought it would be funny to wrap an old lamp-cord around his leg and plug it into the wall to "wake him up" He was dead for 45 minutes before anyone at the party noticed...

Same batch of kids, too. Underage drinking can *kill* in so many stupid ways...

Good lord, where did you go to high school, Purgatory?

Close, Hastings:)

(The kicker was it used to be and probably still is a fairly strict hard-core Christian town...I was harassed by Fundamentalist kids most of the time I went to school there.)

looks like paul's little sis MIGHT learn a bit here.....but then, perhaps not........it all depends on how mom and dad are handling things.....i hope, for all of them, that an equitable solution is found......

The girl said she duct taped the handles of the liquor cabinet shut to keep her friends out, and it got broken when they got into it.

It depends on how many people were there. If half a dozen of them drank that much, they're in trouble. If it was shared between a hundred, so what? 15 is a bit young, I suppose.

The damage isn't good, but if teenagers party drunk or sober, things get broken. Breaking things can be funny.

The part that bothers me is that she is 15 and has a car. I had a car at 18, but I can think of only one other person in my group of friends who had one.

I drank a lot less at 18 than at 17 because I was driving.
