low_delta: (I can't explain)
If I'm going to give a computer away, what do I have to do to wipe all traces of my files from it?

you could format it & reinstall windows (if you have the disk?). that's the best way... otherwise you have to pick around for all of the files.

Remove the HD, drop some thermite through it, put new HD in computer, sell it.

I suppose you still want it to work afterward?
If so the acid rinse is out...

I thought there is software that removes the files and personal info...

I always heard that even if you reformat, there is a way to get some of the stuff back...I have no idea it that is true.

We use a free utility called Boot and Nuke to wipe discs at work - you can gety it here:

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

It overwrites the disc with random data - you choose how many times you want this to happen. If you go for the full DOD strength wipe it will probably take about a day to complete but not even the CIA could find anything on it at the end of the process.
