Green Bay is a city, not a body of water. The bay is called Green Bay, but since the bay was named after the city, its name is The Bay of Green Bay.

Back when the French ran the territory, it was named Baie des Puants. When translated literally, it means "Stinky Bay".

So it's named after the city. Very interesting. Between the time the French called it Stinky Bay and the time it was named after the city, what was it called? I wonder if it was differentiated from Lake Michigan.

Now I'm wondering about Sister Bay.

Records don't exist of that time. ;-)

Different tribes would have had different names. The experts don't even agree on what "Milwaukee" or "Wisconsin" meant.
