Remember Charo? Cuchi-cuchi? She plays guitar. I didn't know that. All I remember were the insipid talk show and Hollywood Squares appearances. She doesn't just play guitar - she's good. From a website I found:
One of the highlights in her shows is when she plays classical guitar. She was the winner of Guitar Player magazine's Readers Poll as Best Flamenco Guitarist two years in a row. She usually plays guitar two hours a day, but before major concerts will practice up to five hours daily. "Sometimes I think, taking the hours I give to the guitar, when I die, half of my life will have been given to that instrument."

When audiences began asking when she'll do an album spotlighting her playing, she began preparing Guitar Passion. Called "a fine flamenco-rooted album that spotlights her fluid fingerplay" (Billboard, June 10, 1995), Guitar Passion (Universal Wave Records) was named Pop Album of the Year (female artist) at the 1995 Billboard International Latin Music Conference, and reached Platinum worldwide. Charo recalls, "Guitar Passion introduced me as a musician to those who did not know I could play guitar. But while promoting it, people would ask 'What happened to 'cuchi-cuchi' and that energy and that wiggle?'."

I don't think I've heard of that show. Apparently, that's part of the problem. ;-)

Charo also used to own a restaurant on Kauai - we had supper there a couple of times when we were there in the hopes that she would show up and play for us, but that never happened. I don't think she owns the restaurant anymore.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY K!!

I knew Charo played.. had seen her play on the tele back in .. oh, the seventies. She was good, but that was not what people focused on then either. They wanted to talk to her, and wanted her to wiggle.

Thanks, R!!

I wonder if I did see her play, but had no idea how good she really was.

You know, that's funny, because I do remember her playing guitar. She played several times on Mike Douglas, and on a couple of other variety shows I can't remember the names of... Donny and Marie, maybe? Sonny and Cher? I'm not sure. But I remember her playing guitar almost every time I watched her. There'd be a lot of silly, and giggling innuendo, and tits, and then this amazing guitar would happen. My grandmother always insisted my grandfather watched for the tits, and he always insisted he watched for the guitar. The truth is most likely somewhere in between, but, yeah... She's incredible.

It must just be me, then. I know I've got a pretty poor memory. But then I probably never even absorbed that info. I never watched that closely.

:)

There's always so much other stuff going on when one is talking to Charo, I'm sure you're not the only one.

Hahaha!

Maybe 25 or 30 years ago, I was aware that she played guitar, but I'm sure I had no idea how good she was.

I can understand that. It took a long time for me to get to the point where I could really appreciate her talent, but there was always this sense that what she was doing was uncommon. Of course, that may also have stemmed from my lack of exposure to classical guitar.

I remember reading an interview with her years ago, and she IS amazing!

People always make fun of Liberace, for the same sorts of reasons, but the man was a damn fine pianist underneath all the trappings...
