My cousin has some large dogs. One of them is a husky. She'd had it for thirteen years. It attacked her. Nobody knows why. She had a lot of stitches in her arms and chest. The dog was going for her neck, but she was able to stay standing for a while, just out of reach. When she fell, she ended up above the dog, and was able to grab a rock and beat it enough that it stopped attcking her.
Animal Control took it away. They kept it for ten days, for observation. She knows it has to be put to sleep, because they don't know why it attacked, but she feels bad, because it had been her pet for over a decade. Fair enough. But get this: A couple of her coworkers are giving her a hard time about killing the poor animal. Way to make her feel. What could anyone possibly do with this dog? You'd have to keep it locked up away from people for the rest of its life. What's the point? I'm sorry, but I believe in euthanasia.
EDIT: If you disagree with me that euthanasia is acceptable in general, I do respect your choice. Your pet: your choice.

Pass the compassion from LJ friends back to your cousin

Date: 2006-05-04 05:04 pm (UTC)From:i love dogs. when i was 6/7 our labrador bit me but it was totally my/our fault. they'd sent him off to a trainer that was really terrible and mean and only realized how terrible he was after we got the dog back and he was no longer a nice/sweet cuddly puppy but a snappy dog that hated children. i was the only one in the family that he really couldn't stand because i was the only young child.
well, i was playing w/our nice dog and on accident, snuck up on the -mean- dog, goosed him & that was that. he turned around/attacked & just about tore my nose off. i knew to avoid him but i thought i had a different dog. i would have felt terrible had they put him to sleep. we had a huge yard and he was rarely out when i was... even if he was out he would have never run -at- me and growl/attack, it was only if i tried to mess w/-him-.
so anyway, i think there are so many different scenarios when it could or could not be warranted....
for this poor lady, she's had the dog for 13 years and the dog completely, unexpectedly changed? i don't know that she'd necessarily have any alternative. she couldn't give it away because if it'd do it to her it could definitely do it to someone else. she can't keep it pinned up for the rest of it's life. what in the world is she supposed to do? just keep it and HOPE that it never surprisingly turns on her again and maybe next time kills her!?
that is scary and i would hate to have to make that choice. too bad that her coworkers are so unsympathetic :(
