At the suggestion of a friend, I signed up for Yahoo! Music. It's very cool. It cost me seventy bucks for the year, but that's way cheaper than cable TV, and I listen to this quite a bit.

I started out with their free radio thing. I rate a bunch of bands, albums and songs, and it plays music according to my taste. Most of the songs are ones I've rated, but some are based on similar artists. If it plays a song I don't like, I skip it. It's like radio without bad songs. I enjoyed that for about a month. Then I started their Music Engine. This is where I actually choose the specific music I want to hear. I can choose a band or an album, or even a single song. I can create playlists (but I don't).

I've been using it to hear music that I've been curious about but never heard. Right now I'm listening to Bill Bruford. Last night it was Roland Kirk. The night before, I heard Miles Davis and Hubert Sumlin. Steve Morse was really good. He's with Deep Purple now. I should find out what they sound like these days. I intend to listen to Physical Graffiti, since I've never heard that one straight through. And pick up those late-period Who albums I've never heard. I could make a whole list.

Any suggestions for me? Anyone you think I should hear?

oh man, i love that service. i only use the cheap version, because, well, i'm cheap. i'll probably get the paid one when i move to CR, since they have almost my entire music collection in their listings.

if you want to look at what i've rated (hundreds), my id is farbelist. be warned, though, some of them i haven't heard yet. i go to a band's page if i really like them and add all the "similar artists" at a level two.

i meant the free version...

My id is fockafino.

I have a few bands rated high, just because I'm curious and I want them to come up. I have a few bands rated at one star, because I dislike them in general, but I like one of their songs. So I rate that song high, and the band low.

I've been adventurous and listening to a lot of new (for me) music, but that radio station sure sounds nice.

The only choice I can find its public/hidden.

"When your profile is public, members can find you in username searches..."

Oh, I found the link to "share your station." It gave me this to use as a link:

I believe the regular radio thing is free. This one has a four star, plus "don't play" rating system. You can rate artists, albums and songs. If you have a yahoo mail account, you're in. I forget if you have to install anything, though.

Woo - I knew there was a reason I bought some decent speakers for my PC :) Hadn't realised how interactive things had got, I guess Web2 is finally beginning to make some kind of sense.

I'd recommend The Swans, Sophia and PJ Harvey

Okay, I'll put those on the list. Although I have most of Harveys albums.

I'm not a huge fan of electronic music, but they're not bad. I could listen to them. In a similar vein, check out Signaldrift, if you can find them.

Thanks!
