I'm sure half my friends list has heard this already, but by sister-in-law was in a bad accident. She was riding in the passenger seat of their semi, when they hit a wild turkey. It came through the windshield (the driver's side, I think) and hit her in the face. After they got pulled over, she made her way out of the truck and down to the ditch - how, I have no idea. They took her to the hospital in Orlando, by flight-for-life. Her facial bones were fractured, her cheek is torn up, and they're not sure if she'll be able to see out of that eye again. I forget what else - broken nose, concussion? Not good.

A surgeon put little metal plates in her face (eye socket?) She got attention from a plastic surgeon and an opthamologist last night.

This happened yesterday afternoon. They're letting her go tomorrow. She's staying down there for a week, in order to make follow-up visits with the doctors.

Devonne said with all the blood, she thought she lost her eye. If that were me, and I thought my eye had come out, I probably would have passed out on the spot.

The turkey ended up flapping around in the sleeper, and a passerby who stopped to help was dispatched to remove and dispatch it.

I suspect she was in shock, unbelievable pain, and her brain went on auto pilot to get to the ditch. I'm really hoping, and praying everything heals up well with no lingering after effects.

Me too. And I hope I can at least act on autopilot if I ever get into a situation of that severity.

oh my god... what a freak sounding accident. i'm glad she's alive though and was able to pull over safely. i have no idea how i'd react in a situation like that. probably not too calmly.

i hope her eye will be ok!

If Stan, who was driving, had been hit, they might both be dead.

I guess it was the bone around the eye that was broken.

I am so sorry to hear this. I didn't keep up with my friends list very well today. I hope the plastic surgeon is able to restore her face. I cannot begin to imagine how she must feel. My heart goes out to the lot of you.

By 'today' above, I mean yesterday. I am not keeping up very well with language today.

I read about everything you mentioned, although I didn't realize that the turkey was still alive after all that. What a nightmare for everyone involved.

Stan's hand got cut up pretty bad (but he didn't have it looked at until the next day, when someone else insisted).

Did you see that she got to keep a turkey feather? :-)

I didn't know about Stan's hand. I'm glad someone insisted.
