I haven't seen hair that high in... I don't know how long.

Does anyone know why stores require you to fork over ID, when returning something without a reciept? It doesn't make sense. If they think you're ripping them off by returning something that was bought elsewhere, why isn't the store's price tag enough? If they want to keep tabs on you to make sure you'renot returning too many things, why don't they ask for ID when you have a reciept? Of course, I probably wouldn't be half as pissed off about it, if I had remembered my ID. Wasted half an hour driving back and forth.

You know, that's a good question. Maybe someone in retail can answer that.

Or maybe we're impersonating someone else just to return some stuff ;p'''''. Heh, that would be a weird hobby, IMHO.

If you're in their database, you've been returning too much stuff... Showing ID is a PITA, but not too intrusive. There must be a black market in Wal*Mart price tags, or they wouldn't bother.

Sometimes I have the foresight to get a store gift receipt, just in case it doesn't fit. I usually forget, though.

I just asked my husband about your question and his first response was... "What the heck was he doing driving around without his driver's license??? No one should go anywhere without their ID!" He said that there are a lot of people who come to him in the same condition and he always thinks that same thing, and it really ticks him off. People try to BUY GUNS without any ID's on them and get mad at him when he won't allow them to do so... nor will he let friends "buy it for them". Now personally... that makes me feel a lot better that he is so careful.

As to why you need the ID...one of the people who already responded to you told you the right reason. You would not believe the number of people who try to, and do, pull fraud on the stores. (and many get away with it!) So... with the ID in the system they can keep track of the people who are ALWAYS returning stuff and in that way can sometimes end the fraudulent transactions.

Kevin... you would not BELIEVE what people try to (and do) pull. There are people who buy things before Christmas just to put under the tree... and then return everything the day afterward. -
There are guys right before hunting season who come in and buy guns... go hunting... and then return the guns... sometimes damaged. -
There are people who use things for YEARS and then try to return them as damaged! Sometimes the rust on the objects gives them away! -
AND there are many people who try to return things that are not even from that store. The funniest thing is that sometimes they get away with it! Robert told me that someone returned something the other day... and it was accepted... and it had (CLEARLY) an AVON label on the thing! They will bring in stuff from K-Mart, or other stores too.
Once I remember Sean telling me that they accepted a fish back to pets that was a BLUEGILL minnow!
Obviously some of the folks who work in the store are none too bright.

So anyhow... you asked... now you know... I hope.
Try to save your receipts! :-)

just a side note.. i've heard that walmart will accept other stores merchandise as a return. (i can't confirm though because i hate returning things.. and usually end up out of the money because i'm too lazy). i've heard it is in hopes that you bring the item in and then end up buying even more things from their own store.

also, maybe he wasn't driving :p

Well...

My husband, my daughter, and my son-in-law all work at Wal*Mart. It is not true that Wal*Mart will take back anyone's stuff. I don't know who told you that.

I don't know about you but my driver's license is in my wallet. Even if I were not driving I would have it. My husband's driver's license is also in his wallet. If we were going to get money back on an item we would undoubtedly have our wallets along. I did think that perhaps Kevin was not driving but he did not say that so that caused that reaction.

"I don't know who told you that."

You certainly wouldn't, it was a statement made irl to me .. it's probably just an urban myth. That's why I said, "I can't confirm that" and said "I heard" rather than "I know".

I do have my license in my wallet but if my husband is taking me out for a quick errand, I do not always take my purse. In fact, I hate my big clunky purse and often leave it in the car covered up.

I forget my wallet a lot. I even forgot it the next time I went out today, after I posted about this.

don't you feel lopsided w/out it? :p i think ken does. i would HAAAAAAATE to have to carry something like that around. i hate a purse.. much less something bound to my person like wallets are.

Date: 2005-12-28 04:31 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
I carry as little as possible. This means I keep my cash wrapped around my license, a credit card and my insurance card. Very thin in my pocket.

But for Christmas, I got a wallet, so I'm going to try using it (mainly because my credit cards wear out in my pocket). It's a lot bigger than I'm used to, but it's still new so haven't gotten used to it yet, and I didn't notice.

I went out of the house three times today, and had my license along once.

At least you don't have to have it tattooed on some part of your body. ;-)

Date: 2005-12-28 04:33 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Actually, I think any store will take anything back, unless they can prove you didn't buy it there. If it's an item they stock and it doesn't have another store's tag on it, I can't imagine why they wouldn't take it (unless they have a "no reciept, no refund" policy). That's probably why the rumor goes around - because someone got away with it.

Date: 2005-12-28 04:20 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Oh, I believe the stuff that people pull. It's just really annoying, when you have an item that's still in the shrink wrap, and still has the store sticker on it. I suppose the employees can't be trusted to discern that, and are made to follow the rules, even when the rules don't make sense.

Date: 2005-12-28 08:34 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com
They have to keep track of who is making returns. I'm sorry if that makes no sense to you.

I'm also sorry that you wasted a half-hour of your life. Things happen.

Date: 2005-12-28 03:05 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
No, that makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense is that they don't seem to ask for ID if I have a reciept. Why one way and not the other?

And yes, I'm aware that all stores do this.

Date: 2005-12-28 05:54 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com
I honestly don't know, except that, of course, you have a receipt that shows the proof of purchase and maybe that is enough to put into the computer?
I sure as heck am glad I don't work retail!!! It's enough trouble dealing with the people just reaching puberty! ;-)

Date: 2005-12-28 04:24 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
And you don't have to feel bad for me that I forgot my wallet. Things happen. ;-)

Date: 2005-12-28 05:57 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com
Oh don't worry! I will only feel sorry for you if something happens and you don't have it. We all forget stuff! My husband is the one who is tired of dealing with people who don't bring in their IDs. He has some things for sale in his department that I sure would not want to sell to ANYONE. *peace man!*

Date: 2005-12-28 12:22 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ravenfeather.livejournal.com
*laughing* I thought the same thing.. driving back and forth with no id.. where was your drivers license young man??? *grin*

Date: 2005-12-28 04:14 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
I even saw it when I was wandering around the house before I left, and thought, "oh yeah, I need to grab that." I realized I had forgotten it, just before I got to the store.

Date: 2005-12-28 11:53 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ravenfeather.livejournal.com
hehehe.. I will forget something quicker if I see it just before I am heading out.. I don't know why that is. I can SPECULATE why... *grin*
