Does anyone know the name of one of those charities where you donate money, and they give livestock to a family in a third world country? And how reputable those charities are?
The one I have given to more than once is called Heifer International. You choose the animal you want to give--or give a share of--and send them the money. They ship an animal to a third world country. They have a contract with the person getting the animal that they will share as follows: If they get a pair of breeding llamas, for instance, the first off-spring is given away to someone else. If they are given chickens they share the eggs and are also able to sell them for their own support.
They give a wide variety of animals including cows, sheep, llamas, goats, chickens and ducks and water buffalo. Because you can buy "a share" you can tailor the gift to your wallet. One year I gave a "knitting basket" which included wool bearing animals whose coats would be used to knit clothing and blankets. I only gave a share, of course.
They are totally reliable and have been around for decades. It's a favorite charity of mine.
