I'm listening to a Stones album. All the way through.

This is a first for me.

It's not bad. I could listen to it again.

Considering there are probably a dozen of their albums in the house, I should probably hear some more.

Not bad?? Aiyeeeeeee!!

I hope you have "Sticky Fingers." It's worth hearing all the way through.

Oh yeah, we have that one. I've always meant to listen to them (and several dozen more LPs), but I never get around to it. Most of the LPs are in the basement, and I seldom feel like dragging out even the ones that are in the family room near the stereo.

Do NOT pass go. Do NOT collect $200. GET (if you don't already have) the live LP from 1969, 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out'.

One of THE finest live recordings EVER made. It's got THE definitive version of 'Midnight Rambler' on it, IMHO.

I've heard that the bootleg live recording from the tour (Liver Than You'll Ever Be) is even better, but I don't have it...

I don't care how good a live record it is, it's still the Stones.

*tries to keep a straight face*

aaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhh

And do tell what is lacking about the Stones? Why do you think, for example, that The Who is better?

Date: 2005-11-25 05:56 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
My favorite Stones songs are the ones that are... more... bigger. Um, fuller sound, better produced, that more goes into the songs. Like "Heartbreaker" or "You Can't Always get what You Want," for example. Less garage-bandy (though I like that too, in general). A full sound. Like a lot of work went into it.

Who can say that the Who is better? Or not better? While I think the Stones are a great band, they've just never hooked me. Mick doesn't make me want to watch the band. I like how Richards comes alive when he's got a guitar on, but they really don't do anything for me. I mean, I like the band, but I like a lot of bands.

You look like you're going to beat me with a bat if you don't like my answer!

"Sticky Fingers" has some really jazzy songs. Listen to "Can't You Hear Me Knockin," which they actually performed live a few years ago and blew everyone (including me!) away.

And, no, I'm not going to beat you with that there bat. I'm just really and truly curious.

Right now I'm even more curious about people who actually don't like The Beatles. I mean, really, I just don't get that. Especially now that I'm reading the biography about them that was just published. It's a wonderful read.

Who had/have moments of BEING the greatest rock n'roll band in the world.....:-)

Yes, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out and Sticky Fingers are the best. Definitely listen to them!

i like goats head soup and their satanic majesties request and aftermath

Date: 2005-11-25 04:12 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] serendipity.livejournal.com
Can you say why they're your favorite Stones albums?

Date: 2005-12-08 01:05 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] i.livejournal.com
it probably has more to do with when i heard them than the music itself.

Date: 2005-12-08 04:29 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] serendipity.livejournal.com
I understand that.

But the music itself is really great if you take the time to listen as if it's the first time! That's one of the things that amazes me about live Stones concerts - how the hell do they continue to keep their music so fresh? I was disappointed that Mick didn't sing "Ruby Tuesday" this time around. It seems like such a simple old song, but when he sings it live, it's truly magical. Same for the more complex tunes such as "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Midnight Rambler" (which was greatly missed last time).

Anyway, for what it's worth, I like "Sticky Fingers" because it's jazzier (although I'm not a real jazz fan) and more improvisational sounding. "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" is great, and when they performed it live a couple years ago it really blew everyone away.

i would love to see tham live someday. (or half dead, in kieth's case)

There are only a couple of songs on each of those, that i know. But "2000 Light Years from Home"and "Heartbreaker" are among my favorites.

And thank you for it!

We owe you many thanks!

you are very welcome. better that you should enjoy them than that they should be gathering dust in my closet.

Wild Horses is great.

*sigh* I love Wild Horses.

(Sorry, I just received this comment, only 1 week and 4 days late.)

I know. I've been getting old comments lately too.

I have to credit both of those records for making me pay more atention to the Stones.

I'll NEVER forget how blown away I was when I first listened to GYYYO.
And still am!

If you've never seen "Midnight Rambler" live, you haven't lived!

Date: 2005-11-25 06:02 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] roadskoller.livejournal.com
Ahhh!! I've forgotten that one! That's excellent!

Date: 2005-11-25 04:20 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] specificocean.livejournal.com
I've never been so fortunate, alas....

Date: 2005-11-25 07:12 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] serendipity.livejournal.com
The guy sitting behind me at the last concert and I were disappointed that they didn't perform it (although they have been through much of this tour, as in the past). But they did do "Sympathy for the Devil," another great song that's simply spellbinding when performed live.

I'm sure it is!

Strolling Bones

Date: 2005-11-25 04:41 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] kingseyeland.livejournal.com
I have Exile but never play it. I also have 40 Licks and snagged "2000 Man" and "Out of Tears" from iTunes. That's pretty much all I want.

Re: Strolling Bones... hahaha!

Date: 2005-11-25 06:07 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
It's getting to the point where I have too many records to play the less-than-stellar ones even once a year. It's a good record, but not one that I'd go out of my way for. And considering we only have it on vinyl (at the moment) playing it at all is going out of my way.

Sad but true.
What, no turntable connected to the stereo?.....*lol*...

Date: 2005-11-26 03:48 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Oh yea, we have a turntable. It's just a pain to go digging through boxes, looking for LPs, and then cleaning them, setting them up on the turntable, and dropping the needle. And turning them over every 20 minutes. It's got to be a record that I really want to hear.

I consider them one of the all-time great bands. One that I'd pick my 12 favorite songs and make my own best-of record, and totally love it. But beyond that...
