Alito wrote the opinion in 1999 in a case that said a Christmas display on city property did not violate separation of church and state doctrines because it included a large plastic Santa Claus as well as religious symbols.

That's like saying the KKK isn't racist because they allow black members.

What a moron.

Actually, the argument was that there were secular symbols (such as Frosty the snowman) included. The argument itself, I think, had some validity, though I disagree with it.

Frosty is secular.

Saint Nicklaus, bishop, is decidedly buddhist Catholic, I'd have to admit...

Is there some connection between Christmas and religion?

I don't know. Is Pagan a religion?

Sheesh.

The argument being that it's okay as long as you give different religions or views equal time?

Yeah, there's some validity to that argument.

And that little quote I posted doesn't give the whole story. Personally, I'm not very opposed to religious displays on municipal grounds. But it makes me nervous because who knows how far it could go. If we allow it in one instance, another city could take the opportunity to do more blatant promotion.

I think the argument was a bit more complex, but essentially yeah, it was an equal opportunity thing. Personally, religious displays make me wretch, but on the other hand, I think that religious displays at holdiay time do no harm whatsoever and should be more or less allowed. I wouldn't think of it as an objection to this guy's nomination. There are more serious cases to examine, probably.

I don't make any claims for my logic when it comes to Christmas. I just love it, for the most part, and dislike things just because I do.

I just hate little figures showing Santa Claus at the Manger worshiping the baby. I keep them separate. If one chose, one could celebrate Christmas strictly from a non-religious angle and if one chose, one could do only Christian things.

By and large, logic, as a skill, is neither taught nor encouraged.
