Ow. My back. We split wood for about six hours today. We were moving pretty fast, too. There were quite a few chunks of wood that were over 100 pounds. That's about my limit. We weighed the (twenty) pieces of one hunk, after we split it. It was 160 pounds. All I could do with those was to roll them over to the splitter and lift one side of it and then slide it up. It was hard work. I really had to eat and drink a lot to keep myself fueled and hydrated. I put the logs on the splitter and Cyn worked the lever and cleared the pieces away while I brought more logs over. We both took the split wood into the shed. Probably shouldn't have done that, since we didn't get done until just after the hardware store closed. Now I have to take the splitter back in the morning.

Now we have enough firewood to last until the next tree falls. Which is to say the unforseeable future. And that's if we have a lot more fires than we did last year.

It was interesting to see what was inside of the tree. Spiders, ants, grubs, woodpecker holes, rotted wood, roots of weeds grown down in the crotches, clothesline, pruned branch ends that were surrounded by new wood.

It was a good day for it. Sixty and sunny.

With all that you won't have to run your furnace this winter. Just heat your house from the fireplace.

. . .except when I come to visit. :^) Just hook up an electric blanket for me to snuggle under. My Mensa friends tell me they use very little electricity, so you would still save.

I really want to get some kind of fireplace insert, to save on the heat loss. But I haven't even started to check into that yet.

If you grasp the concept of how they work it should be possible to roll your own from scrap at a scrapyard.

Not too bad today. The back is really stiff, but most of the rest of my muscles are a little stiff. Including my feet, because I wore my old, uncomfortable steel-toe boots.

That's what Cyn said. I wonder if there's anything I can do to forestall that. Maybe I should work those muscles today?

Mostly it was the back. It could feel the strain in the first fifteen minutes, yesterday. The arms and legs aren't bad at all. Of course, they've also got scrapes and bruises.

Wow that's a lot of work.

Sure was.

*sigh*

I still have five trees worth of logs sitting in the back yard waiting to be split. Some of them are a lot bigger than your largest one (from the base of the huge old water oak.. I can't even ROLL some of those).

I was going to use a chain saw.. perhaps a log splitter would be a good idea. I am just letting it sit.. because I have enough firewood from the tops of those five trees to last me two winters. *GRIN*

I LOVE ME A GOOD FIRE!

Wish I had a shed or at least a roof to stack it under though.

... hmm... I can do a roof.. *wanders off*

Definitely get a splitter. It goes really quickly if you have some help. You'll still need a chainsaw to get the pieces small enough to lift up to it, though. This splitter cost me $60 for the day.

The logs were cut between 18 and 24 inches, the larger the log, the shorter they cut it. Does it have to be shorter than that?

This one accomodated logs up to 24". Most of these logs were around 18" and some were bigger around than my armspan. The splitter didn't have much trouble getting through them.

Thanks. The neighbors behind us has a nice yard too, and they spend half the year in Florida, so it's pretty quiet out there.
