The airline's website says a carry-on bag must be small enough to fit in the overhead compartment. How big is that?

i can't give you dimensions but i'm sure you can find it on line but you'd be suprised what i've been able to cram up there and seen other people cram up there...

if you're going for less than a week and don't need a suit i'd just bring a backback... i've fit HUGE ones up there... length and width is more available than height....

I couldn't imagine there not being room for this bag we're thinking of taking, but I was a little worried that the airline would get strict on us. But there are two of us, and we're probably only taking the one bag, so they should cut us some slack, if we're close to the line.

We're going for a week, and I'll probably take a bunch of crap. It's going to be a little cool in california, but still hot in Tucson. Probably do some hiking in the hills, with Dave.

I think about 22" X 10" is in the correct range. Anything smaller than that is fine, too. I carry on a "Caio" bag, if Cyn knows what that means.

it depends on the airline-- they should have the dimensions posted on their website. for xmas trips i take a stuffed backpack to put under the seat and a land's end suitcase with wheels for the overhead compartment. james and i had to check the wheeled one on our way back from nyc the other day because the flight was full and we went stand-by, but usually it's fine.

Only one carry-on allowed. But there's two of us, so that's two bags. Cyn has a little wheeled dealie, that she was thinking of taking, but I've got a bag that's a little smaller.

Excuse me, miss? My bag won't fit. Could you take a look? Hmm, why don't you lean over here? No, over there.

hey, they normally let me use one of those small rolling thangs, but on my flight to Oregon, they made me check it at the plane itself. It was called "Ala Cart" or some shat. Pissed me off cuz it had my laptop in it and it was raining in Portland...soaking the Ala Cart luggage.

The smaller planes have VERY small compartments to put your carry on luggage in. You should be fine coming to Cali, but the little hopper to Las Vegas may not have room.

Midwest says you are not allowed to check laptops.

Example:
22" x 14" x 9" = 45" total outside dimensions

I did find an airline that listed 45 inches. Midwest has no set size, so I wanted to have a good idea what goes. Thanks.

they have a handy dandy little sizing thingie at the check-in area of the airline. if it won't fit once you get on the plane, they will check it for you on the spot and you get it as you deplane, rather than going to the baggage carousel.

also, it's in the low eighties and very dry here. evenings probably down in the 50's by the time you get here. you'll be more comfortable than you think.

Shoo mentioned the "check it at the plane" deal. Don't really want to do that, since we'll probably have snacks in it. But at least it's not a huge hassle.

If the worst thing happens - the carry-on is too big - they'll put a tag on it, and put it in the hold, right there. It's a bit more pain retrieving it at the other end, but at the same time, it will get there and they do it all the time.

Just go for it, or... if you're concerned - you can each take a slightly smaller case, and end up with more luggage space (and more space to bring momentos home - if you're a momentous person).
