I hooked up Cyn's new computer. It seems to work, but there aren't many programs on it. The big thing is that there is no internet. I forgot that we'd need a network card. Would have been nice to have remembered that at the store. They could have installed it for me. (Maybe I can hook the modem up to the surfboard.) So it's all kind of useless right now. And the keyboard cord barely reaches. I'm going to have to drill a hole in the desk.

I unplugged her old computer, to get it out of the way. I moved it over to one side of her desk, and hooked it all back the way it was. It's not working. The monitor is dark. Everything seems to be functioning but the display. They keybord, the mouse, the computer and the monitor itself all have LEDs showing power, but the screen is dark. I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong. As far as I know, every cord is where it was (except that the printer is no longer attached). It shouldn't even have known anything was different.

She said she was going to be upset if it wasn't working in the morning. I'm not sure why upset, exactly, but this is a worse situation than I expected.

Hmm.. what kind of monitor is it? Can it switch between two inputs? Does it have on-screen display when you're adjusting brightness, etc?

Are there two outputs on the video card?

i hope you get it de-bugged...

As far asI know, there are not two outputs. And there's no onscreen display showing.

It's working now. I didn't see the alternate card, down below.

Now for the next bit... you can get 10/100 NICs fairly cheap - I'd suggest checking online somewhere like pricewatch.com. You can get major-name NICs for like 5 or 7 bucks (3com intel netgear, etc), so unless you don't care, don't spend more than $15 at a local place and don't buy a "generic" or off brand.

There are ways to use serial ports, or even parallel ports, for networking, but they won't be nearly as nice as ethernet.
