I have a set of rules that I wish everyone would employ, regarding the use of LJ cuts.
First of all, let me say that if you really don't want to use a cut, that's your business. I highly recommend following these rules, but that's just a recommendation - that's all. So, no, I'm not really an LJ-cut nazi.
1. Non-worksafe pictures. Unless everyone on your f-list has approved such posting or is filtered appropriately, or you don't care if they drop you.
2. If your picture is wide enough to cause sidescroll on someone's friends page, use the cut. Sidescroll makes your friends page impossible to read.
3. If you have more than two or three pictures, please use the cut. Unless you're sure everyone on your friends list has much bandwidth. (see #4)
Edit: this was probably a bit more strict than necessary. Even for people on dialup. Use your judgement.
4. If you've made an extremely long post, please use the cut. Let me emphasize that properly: an extremely long post. If you're on my friends list, you haven't made a post that long in a month or two (except maybe for James today). I get really annoyed when people make me click for three more paragraphs.
That's it. Those are the rules that I wish people would follow. Here are some other things to keep in mind with cuts:
5. If you don't care if anyone sees it, feel free to cut it.
6. If you don't mind people dropping you, feel free to skip cutting.
7. Don't get pissed off at people not cutting, drop them. Kinda sucks, but hey, if they don't care about you, why should you care about them?
8. Give people some idea of what's behind the cut.
Here's the code, in case you've forgotten: <lj-cut> or <lj-cut text="alternate text">
