1. Total volume of music files on my computer?
280 MB. I have at least five times that on my computer at work. We used to have a T1 line there, but now we don't. And downloading music from file sharing is in "extreme violation" of company policy. Now that I've got cable at home, there are no good free, or even cheap, places to download lots of music. I used to get mostly rare songs, so I've got some interesting stuff.

2. The last CD I bought was:
The latest U2 CD? A Bowie and a Peter Gabriel DVD? Laurie Anderson and George Harrison CDs. Those were gifts for people. The last CDs I got were, Amy Ray - Stag, KC - Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair, U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb for Christmas. Bought for myself? Shortly before Christmas, I got some CDs from [livejournal.com profile] i, including Anoraknophobia by Marillion, and From the Caves of the Iron Mountain by Gorn, Levin and Marotta.

3. The last song I listened to before writing this was:
I had L.A. Woman in last night, so it would be "Riders on the Storm."

4. Song playing right now: none. Music doesn't usually get turned on in the mornings.

5/6. Five songs/albums I listen to a lot or that mean a lot to me:
I don't really listen to anything a lot. I deliberately rotate. I have favorite albums and favorite songs, but nothing that really means a lot to me.

My favorite records are Stand Up by Jethro Tull, Hallowed Ground, by Violent Femmes, The Bends by Radiohead... uh... Second tier would include Quadrophenia, probably some U2 including War. L.A. Woman, Security, Workbook, Ted Nugent, Animals, Wish You Were Here, Greetings from Asbury park, N.J. ...

My favorite songs are much harder to list. "God" by Tori Amos, "Starseed" by Our Lady Peace, "Carolyn's Fingers" by the Cocteau Twins, "Begin the Begin" by R.E.M., "Fugitive" by Indigo Girls, "Shelter from the Storm" by Bob Dylan... *shrug*

if i had to choose a best of tori amos or the indigo girls
i'd have to jump off of a cliff! ain't no way, ya know?

i love our lady peace- is the amy ray album any good?
after reading some reviews, i passed on it, but i love her gutteral
and emotional vocals as a general rule.

i didn't even include the cocteau twins in my lot,
but i love most of their stuff. and kate bush.
there's just no doing a meme such as this,
but i enjoy seeing the immediate results.

music, esp. female vocalists, have meant a lot to me in my life.
in my youth when no one spoke to me of what was important in the world,
it was music that helped me to shape myself into what i wished to become.

Stag was a little disappointing, but I still like it.

I couldn't say what music does for me. I'm not generally an emotional person, but sometimes it evokes something from me.

Both "God" and "Fugitive" are songs that get into me like few others.

1. Total volume of music files on my computer?

58GB. Plus 38GB on my iPod. Plus 90GB on an external drive. I rip everything. It's the nature of iPod ownership.

2. The last CD I bought was:
Heartless Bastards. It's okay. They opened for Drive-By Truckers here. Now THAT band...wow.

3. The last song I listened to before writing this was:
Jimmy Eat World - "A Praise Chorus" (I was driving)

4. Song playing now: none.

5/6. Five songs/albums that I listen to a lot or that mean a lot to me: I deliberately rotate as well. But some stand out.

Favorite records are Who's Next, Moving Pictures, Zeppelin I, Sugar's Copper Blue, and Jimmy Eat World's Futures (yes, it just came out and it's already up there).

Favorite songs are therefore predictable: "Baba O'Riley," "Tom Sawyer," "Good Times, Bad Times," Sugar's "The Act We Act," and "Work" by Jimmy Eat World.

This all changes with the days, though.

Stand Up is a great, great fucking record. I miss it.

I hate when I miss an HTML tag.

Yeah, I left out all the "favorite songs" that were on the albums I listed, just for variety's sake.

I like Sugar a lot, but Mould's solo work a bit more (especially the abovementioned orkbook).

Who's Next? is up there too. It doesn't have the emotional effect of Quadrophenia, though. I'm not sure why Rush didn't make the list. As great as they are, nothing seems to jump out as a "favorite." But there were another two dozen records that just barely missed whatever shifting criteria I had for that list.

I finally got to see Mould a couple years ago in Columbus, Ohio. Great show. He busted out some Sugar and Husker Du songs. Always a plus.

I saw him on his Last Dog and Pony Show tour - must have been '98. I wasn't very familiar with him atthe time, so I'm sure I didn't appreciate it as much as I would now. At the time I had only heard Workbook, which is his least typical record, and probably some Sugar work.

I just noticed I wrote "orkbook" in my previous comment.
