Why is good help so hard to find?

We've used Kohl's Floor Covering for three different jobs now. They screwed up the scheduling on two of them. This last time, I went out there the day before installation, because they never called me with the time of install, and they couldn't find my paperwork. The only thing they could tell me for sure was that I wasn't getting the install because the paperwork wasn't in the tray. I told them they'd better hurry because I only had a week. So I cancelled my vacation day. I was just about to leave for work when I got a call. Dave told me he had a crew with time that afternoon. I said that didn't give me time to arrange the time off work. The next opening they had was too far out. He said I could leave the door open for them (they normally require someone to be there). I said fine. I stopped by in the morning, and everything seemed to be fine. They did the vinyl that day and the carpet the next. When I stopped there in the evening to check on the carpet, I noticed my tape measure and clock were gone. Turns out one of the guys accidentally took my tape measure (they all look the same), but the clock is gone. Dave said, emphatically, that he trusts the two guys that did the jobs. Funny, he didn't mention the helpers. The kid who was there when I stopped in, didn't give me a comfortable feeling.

So then I hired someone to do the bathroom tile. Same deal. Two mornings, left the door unlocked. Nothing messed with, as far as I know. But the edge of the tile isn't plumb. At the bottom it goes to the corner fo the wall, and at the top it's about an inch short. Makes the wall look like it's out of plumb. I wish I'd remembered to point that out to the foreman. I was in kind of a rush to get to work. And in the fifteen minutes I was there, I got a parking ticket for parking too close to the crosswalk in front of my house. I swear it can be days without anyone crossing there.

I like my electrician. Seems like a good guy. But one light fixture doesn't work. I told him that a long time ago, and he never came to fix it. I didn't push it, but when he came back for a follow-up visit, I left a note for him. He didn't fix it. Yesterday I called him about it, and he hasn't called me back.

I haven't been shoveling the driveway behind the house. I thought it was going to be gone soon, but we just got a few inches of snow. The neighbor decided since I'm not shoveling back there, he could plow it in. He shoveled the snow from his driveway onto mine. Which doesn't seem like a big deal, but now, when the snow is melted on most of my driveway, there will still be a foot high ridge of ice blocking entrance. Who knows how long that will take to melt.

What the hell is the matter with people?

They've got you cornered; you're a captive market. They know you have to go to them, you don't much have a choice, so they don't have to be good at what they do.

That's only partly true. It's true only if all of them play the same game. The scheduling problem is caused by ineptness, and there are a lot of carpet places. And I don't think the theft is a widespread problem here. But that's definitely the case with the electrician. He's by far the best guy I have found.

What really blows my mind is that people won't make an effort to get the job in the first place. I had two people scheduled to give me quotes on the tile job, but only one showed up. He got the job. I hope his price was fair.
