Ever hear of Quad Graphics? If you subsribe to any magazines, chances are you've got something in your house that they printed. They've got several plants in this part of the state, and each one is the size of a small city. Last fall my dad had a show in their art galleries. Now they are commissioning my dad to do a print for them. It's an anniversary sort of thing. The piece is of the first little press that Harry Quadracci had when he started the business. It's going to be an edition of about sixty. The prints will be distributed to the various plants to hang in the lobbies or managers' offices or something.

This print is to be really big. My dad had never printed anything that big, so he wanted to do a test. That's what we did last weekend. He feels a lot more confident now. But now... Quad wants to send a videographer out to shoot the process. Start to finish - grind the stone smooth, drawing, acid etching, pulling a proof, printing - everything. No pressure there, huh? But then... Mrs. Quadracci wants to come out to see him pull the first print.

And dad's just thinking, "man, I hope this works."

Odds are it will go well. But if it goes bad, it will go really bad - meaning he'll be in hte middle of printing and lose the image. And have to start over. That's the big fear.

How exciting! Even if there was some little glitch, it would make a great videotape documentary. They often have that. And, of course, there's always editing.

Will you help with this one, too? Maybe it will be shown on Channel 10. Quad Graphics is pretty big around here.

Yeah, I'm definitely helping. He can handle the smaller prints by himself, but he prefers to have help. On a big one like this, he really needs an assistant.

I'd be surprised if it makes it to TV, but you never know.

He was on TV, once. He was one of the featured artists one year for the Channel 10/36 art auction. They ran a few short bio segments.

Thanks!

forgot to mention that when he's done with the print, he's selling them the stone too. So that's good money too.
