CNN reports the death toll has passed 70,000 people. That doesn't surprise me. But that's the official count so far. The Maldives are only reorting 47 deaths, but nobody can reach most of them. I read a report saying they were able to get to one of the islands, which had a population of 1500, and one third of the people were gone. And they still couldn't reach either of the neighboring islands. Mayanmar is reporting 70 deaths, but little news is coming out of that country. It has to have been hit as hard as Thailand.

The Aceh toll _by itself_ might end up surpassing 50,000, and all this is before disease sets in.

when Krakatoa blew and caused the tsunami in 1883, about 36,000 perished.....now that the world has about 4 times as many people as in 1883, a death toll of 144,000 could easily be penciled out for the region....
