[Poll #398705]

My asshole brother-in-law won't let my sister get a recliner for their living room. He says they're for white trash. Cindy and I have four. I guess we all know how he feels about us. I didn't have any idea that recliners had any negative stigma. I guess if one had a formal living room (or sitting room, or whatever) a recliner would look out of place, I don't know many people who have homes like that.

Granted, there are some recliners that are damn ugly and look like shit, but I've seen a reclining modular couch that looks high class and feels like heaven.

I think people who get hung up about furniture are shortsighted fuckwits that have no grasp on reality, but that's just me.

I really need to read the rest of the post before clicking on the damn poll. Honestly, a long line of white trash stretches down my family's genealogy, on both my parent's sides. Hell, my maternal great grandparents were first cousins. And don't get me started on the Memphis connection. So there!

Date: 2004-12-07 06:00 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
So you're saying it's about time you got a recliner?

Date: 2004-12-07 06:01 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] seamusd.livejournal.com
No way, dude! They're just so tacky!

Date: 2004-12-07 02:49 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Tacky? Well if you'd stop spilling your beer on it...

Date: 2004-12-07 04:33 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] ravengirl.livejournal.com
doh!
i couldn't take the poll.
we don't have recliners, but i like several models
and wouldn't be opposed to owning one or two.

I don't have one, but I've seen some nice contemporary leather recliners that are mighty fine. Otherwise, in general recliners are too traditional and bulky for my taste, but if they're comfortable and you like them, that's fine with me! To judge them as being only for "white trash" is simply absurd, outrageously judgmental and narrow-minded.

Date: 2004-12-07 06:24 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] marswalker.livejournal.com
...for white trash
Bwahahahahahahaha! riiiight.

One of my friends has two of these computerized heat-and-massage recliners, black leather with hardwood accents. They look very classy. They're extreemly comfortable, in fact i've slept in one or the other more than once. I think they cost more than the average white-trash makes in 3 months.

When I finally get my place, I'd like to have a couple of those in the living room. Granted, they'd be out of place in a Great Hall or a formal room, but that's not the point. The point is that these things are great, and not in the least bit white-trashy, red-trashy, nor blue-green-brown-purple trashy either.

they're damn comfy, but I don't have one. I just slouch down on the sofa and put my feet up on the coffee table.

Date: 2004-12-07 02:48 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Naw, feet on the coffee table is for white trash! >;-)

Has he got something against relaxation?

Date: 2004-12-07 08:03 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lonita.livejournal.com
Besides, you can get some real fancy sexy ones from La-Z-Boy these days, that don't even look like recliners.

Date: 2004-12-07 10:59 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ravenfeather.livejournal.com
hehehe... IS HE FROM THE SOUTH AND A MEMBER OF THE JUNIOR LEAGUE???

Yep, snoots think recliners IN THE LIVING ROOM are for trash, because you are not supposed to relax in a LIVING room, you do that in the den. NO televisions in the living room either. Living rooms are for entertaining guests. Man could I give you a snoot etiquette lesson. Funny, I "learned" all of this at the knee of my Arkansas born and raised aunt who transported herself to Arizona when she married the first time. She has always been very image conscious.

I could not answer the poll, because my answer isn't there. I don't think it is trashy, but I don't have any because they don't "fit" me. I prefer chaise lounges, but then I don't have any of those either, but I sit on the couch sideways and put my feet up.. ALWAYS unless I am putting on my shoes in the morning. I wonder what image snoots would think if I put a CHAISE (a definite bedroom piece of furniture) in the living room? *grin*

you are not supposed to relax in a LIVING room, you do that in the den.

That'd be fine if they *had* a den.

Date: 2004-12-07 11:44 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] ravenfeather.livejournal.com
You know? My aunt took it a step farther. It was fancy furniture in the living room, and family wasn't allowed in unless they were dressed up and there was company over. No recliners in the den either.. it was a place for the family to SIT properly and discuss things. The recliners and the television were slated to the THIRD public area of the house.. the rumpus/game room. She was so out of control.

Do you mean 'fit' as in 'the right size for your body'? I have a recliner, my third one over decades. Each time I went into LazyBoy, took off my shoes and tried them curled up, with my feet propped up, however I know I like to sit. Some are too small. Some were too big. (Does this sound like the Three Bears?) My current chair is so comfortable I could live in it--and practically do in winter.

Date: 2004-12-07 11:30 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] ravenfeather.livejournal.com
Yes, that is what I mean. I am not built "normal" I have really long legs, a large butt and a really short short body. Most recliners shove my head forward (because my neck doesn't reach the neck roll thing) and my legs end up hitting the foot stool part just below my knee. Very uncomfortable on both ends. My ex was very tall(I mean he still is.. just not in my house) and had lazyboy MAKE him a recliner to fit his body (very long in the body) when we lived in Colorado a good while back. He LIVED in that chair. It was expensive, but over the years, turned out to be a good investment.

I have a chair and ottoman that I sleep in some. It stretches my legs out straiter than a recliner does, just like sitting chaise like.

As a mover, I've been in some mighty rich folks homes and they almost always have recliners.

Date: 2004-12-07 12:54 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] penpusher.livejournal.com
I would have responded to this poll, except I don't have any recliners and I don't believe they are only for "white trash."

Date: 2004-12-07 02:48 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
That's okay. It was really more of a rant than a poll.

Date: 2004-12-07 04:34 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] ravengirl.livejournal.com
yes, yes it was. ;)

Date: 2004-12-07 06:20 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] banana.livejournal.com
You can still take the poll: don't select either option but just press "submit poll". 8~)

Date: 2004-12-08 05:29 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Too bad that doesn't tell me whether he took it or not.

Date: 2004-12-08 04:12 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] banana.livejournal.com
That's a shame. It knows that I've taken the poll because it shows me the results now instead of the questions.

Date: 2004-12-07 01:13 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] kingseyeland.livejournal.com
Are you sitting in a recliner, eating chocolate pie and sipping on a 6-pack of Hamm's while watching Jerry Falwell and threatening to smack your wife around for being "mouthy"?

Seriously. I had no idea. Time to move my recliner out to the front porch.

Date: 2004-12-07 03:01 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] lister-of-smeg.livejournal.com
I'm not white-trash, but I'll openly admit that I have a very nice La-Z-Boy sofa with two reclining sections in it. It's damned nice to just pop that foot rest up, lay back and just relax or doze off at times. To make the situation even more decadent, I have a separate vinyl covered foot-rest in front of the center non-reclining section that I use as a 'coffee table' or as it's originally intended purpose depending upon the situation/mood at the time.

Yup! I'm a proponent of creature comforts and not ashamed to admit it!

HEE HAW!!! ;-D

I am SO JEALOUS of your reclining sofa!

Date: 2004-12-08 05:32 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
The furniture in my dad's living room consists of one of those couches, a recliner, a wooden rocking chair and a cushioned wicker chair.

Our living room has two recliners and a standard couch. Our family room has a recliner, a couch and another chair. Our basement rec room has a couch, a recliner and a loveseat. As far as I know, every one of these but one was a hand-me-down.

Date: 2004-12-08 07:40 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] lister-of-smeg.livejournal.com
I bought my sofa while living in a tent shortly after my separation, but that's a long story which should someday be posted on my own journal.

That silly little foot-rest that I have, that used to be my grandfather's. When he was close to death he asked me if there was anything he could give me, and there was no doubt in my mind as to what I wanted. Just that simple little foot-rest, the one that I remember falling asleep draped over when I was a very young child.

I can't believe how well that beloved foot-rest has held up over all the years. Sure, it needs to be reupholstered again and I will do that, but it's still in damned good shape! It's the most important family heirloom that I have.

I don't even know what recliners are, so I can't look down on you for having some.

Doesn't everyone have a couple of these?

Do you not have chairs with a mechanism that allows you to half way recline, or do you call them a different very Brit name?
Mine have always had a swivel rocker along with the reclining mechanism for the ultimate!

Date: 2004-12-08 04:09 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] banana.livejournal.com
I suppose that I just never knew there was a special word for them. The only people I knew who had one were decidedly middle class.

Date: 2004-12-09 04:41 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
I don't have a problem with that. We middle-classers can't afford to pay for comfort *and* style.

Date: 2004-12-08 05:37 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Chairs. That recline.

I said I had one or two, but I don't. I REALLY want a reclining couch so I can recline and snuggle with my sweatheart.
