Little Steven says that when John Lennon appeared in The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus (with Mitch Mitchell, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards), it was the first time a Beatle had ever appeared onstage with any other (non-Beatle) musicians.

What year was that? He had his Plastic Ono Band around 1972, I think.

That was an out and out act of defiance. That must've been the first sign to the world that the Beatles were about to break up.

Actually, Mick first called Paul to join the Circus, but he said he was going on holiday with the family. So Mick then called John, who brought some friends.
