I once dressed up as Dorothy for Halloween.
Some of my friends said, "I can't believe you dressed up as a girl!" Well... I don't believe Dorothy was a girl, exactly. She's more of an icon. I didn't have to say which Dorothy, did I? When you see her, you don't think of her as a person, you think of The Wizard of Oz. You think of the lion, and of the flying monkeys. You think of the yellow brick road and the emerald city. There was a lot of humor value in me dressing as a female character, but I still didn't feel I was cross-dressing. The character was larger than life.
It was still disappointing to find someone else was dressed as the same character. Embarassing too, because hers was better.
