I don't generally take other people's icons. Mostly because I prefer individuality (that's why most of my userpics are of myself. Or something of mine. Or some approximation of myself). But also because I get annoyed when two people on my friends list have the same icon - I sometimes get confused as to who is who. Not to mention, that it's kinda wrong (depending on the specific picture).
There is one person who I oftensteal borrow icons from (and I never keep them for very long), but it's not because I want to use her pictures to represent myself. It's because I want to kid with her and post comments to her, using her own icons. I'm sure she's not as amused by this as I am.
There is one icon that I stole from someone else. The image is not her own, but she may have made it into a 100x100 userpic. I don't use it often, and never around her.
