This weekend, a friend was telling me of her experience with her grandmother dying, a few years ago. The doctor had told her that it was common for people in her situation to relive their lives. This sort of flashback would impact their current perceptions. My friend said that one time she went to visit her, she didn't recognize her. Later on, she did, because she had gotten to the point in her life story where the girl had been born. At one point, the grandmother's fingers were going. The doctor asked if she had ever knitted. She had, of course.

It doesn't sound very believable the way I tell it, but her story certainly made me wonder.

It makes sense. My father remembered a lot from his younger years as well (prior to health going).

That makes a lot of sense to me, and would certainly explain some aspects we usually ascribe to senility or Alzheimer's...
I have also heard that in certain diseases where death is the result of the disease (cancer is the one I read about) that toward the end, patients reliably "travel" to other places and think they are there. They report things from their travels accurately despite perhaps never having been there in "real life". I find that fascinating.

Your friend's story makes sense to me.
