Tried different speakers on the new stereo and determined that the problem isn't the speakers. Found the bass and treble adjustments. Sound is improved but still lacks the bass response of my seven year old portable stereo.

There's no footboard. You can lop over all over the place! Any special requests for breakfast?

You only eat once a day?

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try when I get a chance, but space for speakers is limited. One is on the fireplace, and the other atop the video cabinet. I think step two is better speakers, and step three is an equalizer.

I'm glad you're feeling better today. And I hope Jill's mother is doing better as well.

I don't usually comment to your posts, but I read them all, and... I don't know what to say. I'm very sorry to hear about your mother in law. I wish you all the luck I can send.

Perhaps you should try playing gangsta rap.

That Mel Torme you've been using can't be doing your woofers any good.

I'm no audiophile, but if you're using crap speaker wire, that might be hurting your sound as well. Also you could make sure your speaker boxes are sealed well. If you've got air escaping from 3-4 different spots on the box, that'll hurt the response as well.

Other advice? Well, Christmas is coming.

I'm running 16 gauge. The wire is better than the speakers.

Maybe it's because the reciever is set up for home theater sound instead of music sound.

Hey, what's wrong with Mel Torme?

The "Velvet Frog"..er.."Fog"...

If the reciever is set-up for home theater (as in 5.1), and you don't have the 5 "satellites" and one sub-woofer, the problem may be that it's pushing all the deep bass response to the subwoofer channel, and filtering it out of the others. What kind of speaker set-up do you have? (two, four, 5, subwoofer, etc?) What kind of reciever (or amp) are they connected to? Is it a home-theater amp (desiged for 5 satellites and one subwoofer)?

It is true that corners and/or agains the wall will help. Also, double-checking the parity or phase will help. If both speakers are wired correctly, the bass can be "additive". If one of the speakers is "out of phase" (crossed wires, for example), that speaker will cancell-out the other speaker's bass.

Try futzing with the way the amp is set-up - if you've only got two speakers, set it up for "full-range", "no subwoofer", and "stereo", and don't enable any of the fancy-shmancy stuff like surround, pro-logic, DTS, AC-3, etc.

16-gauge wire? not bad. Some of the serious audio-nuts I know have speaker wires as thick as garden hoses... me? even on my good set, it's only about 12 G wire, with "monster" contact ends.

It's 7.1 surround, but there are a dozen different setups to choose from, and I chose the one with two speakers.

Doesn't the sound get lost, in those "garden hoses"?

*lol* 7.1 surround, but there are a dozen different setups that seems to be the way of things. A dozen ways to configure, but only one for the situation at hand. There may still be a setting for a subwoofer that can be disabled. Hard to know from here. :-)

My friends with the garden-hose wires have amplifiers that draw more current than my entire last house. Joel, one of those audio-nuts, has to wander around the house turning things off before he turns the stereo on...
