The record store now has separated its oldies from the rest of its rock and pop selections. But most of the records there were 1960s oldies, not '50s and early '60s oldies, like I consider oldies. Most of them were what I'd consider classic rock, but old enough that I wouldn't bother to argue. But one name jumped out at me - The Kinks. The Kinks?! Oldies?!! I think not. They even had a few of their seventies releases. Shitheads.

Yeah, but they started out in the mid-60's, which makes others consider their songs as oldies, same as for the Stones. And some stores that stock 60's music also stock 70's stuff from the same bands. I remember a classmate/friend of mine had some Kinks and Animals albums that I thought were soooo cool. At the time, my sibs and I just had mostly Beatles albums.

I'm guessing, since the clerks there are all really youg, they just went on the looks of the album covers, and the older ones were the first they saw.

But there didn't seem to be any consistency in which records they put in which section.

Somebody in their twenties is organizing the store.

I asked the girl at the counter about the new Rush record, and she wasn't familiar with it.

Sheesh.

The seventies are such ancient history that the fashions have come round again. Even bloody ponchos are popular again. As for the Kinks, Ray Davies is practically a pensioner.

I know you know this, but it always amazes me when I think about it. When I was 20 years old in 1979, if one of my parents' friends asked if I thought music from 1949 was "oldies", I would have said yes. The 40's were a whole different lifetime from mine. The 70's are only 30 years ago to me, but it seems like a lifetime to those young kids at the store.
