I remember having conversations, shortly after the attacks, to the effect of, Why didn't they do something? They should have had planes in the air. They could have shot those airliners down as soon as they realized they had chosen targets. I would not have held it against them.
Do you feel that the families of those passengers would not have been so forgiving?
If Flight 77 didn't hit the Pentagon, but was shot down, maybe they sent a cruise missile into the Pentagon to make sure the families didn't hold Bush (etc.) to blame for their loved ones' deaths. (But that would imply foreknowledge of the attacks to coordinate.)
