I feel very strongly about supporting local businesses over national or regional chains. I appreciate that my money goes to people who live here. And that my neighbors are able to own their own businesses.
Two of my favorite local businesses have closed or are closing soon. Countryside Floral was my favorite. They had all my lawn and garden needs, and also a florist. I used to love wandering around their back lot trying to decide on the perfect flower for my garden. I'm not sure what happened to them. They moved from their old building into part of the old vacant K-Mart. It was not a good venue for them. Their outdoor lot was on concrete instead of grass. I still shopoped there, though. I wish I knew why they moved. High rent, I guess. Or maybe their landlord just terminated their lease. So they did the village a favor by moving into part of some vacant space. But the village wouldn't let them put signage down by the street. And then they closed. So disappointing.
And today I got a letter saying my pharmacy is closing. I'm not sure why that's happening. They're the once business that has been in that nearly-failed-many-times mall since day one. I like Ozaukee Apothecary. It's local and the pharmacists are friendly and knowledgable. Now I have to go to Shopko? I don't feel comfortable in there. Maybe Walgreens, in the next town.
And then Ghost Town just closed. They'd been having some troubles. They were closed for a bit, and when they reopened, they just didn't have what they used to have. Which was supposedly the best fish fry south of Sturgeon Bay. I wasn't a big fan of them.
I don't frequent many other locally owned stores. That's partly because I don't shop much. And party because they don't always have what I want. Heim's shoe store doesn't have a great selection. I split my money between Sears Hardware, Home Depot and Ace Hardwdare, depending on what I need. I'd eat at Hefner's more if they had much besides giant burgers. Definitely Cedarburg Lumber if they were open in the evenings. It's tough.
