Cyn and I were at the pizza place down the street. A young mother and her mother were trying to keep the two rambunctious boys in control. At one point, the grandmother said, "if you don't get over here and eat your pizza, you don't get any ice cream!"

I found this to be a strange thing to say, because I didn't think you should get dessert if your dinner was pizza. But I guess that's just the way I was raised. So I started thinking about it. Maybe I don't get dessert after pizza because I've always just stuffed myself with it. Lately I don't eat that much, but I feel pizza is fattening enough by itself. But I still don't want to eat anything sweet after that because of all the cheese and grease and tomato and spicy pepperoni.

What about you? What are your pizza eating habits? How much do you eat, and do you have dessert afterwards?

It is odd, isn't it. I wouldn't have offered kids both of those as "a meal".

I've heard of families who sometimes had just popcorn for the evening meal. That always seemed odd, too. For as long as I remember I've thought in terms of "protein, vitamens etc". I end up eating a lot of junk, at times, but I habitually "lay down a base" of healthy food.

hehehehe.. I had popcorn for dinner last night.. it is so fatty and filling it serves as a meal. *grin*

Ok! I guess that isn't so different from the evening when I have oatmeal for dinner. And. . .after all. . .we're grownups and get to eat what we want. Right?

Yum! Breakfast for supper is great!

My mom likes popcorn and a milkshake for supper, occasionally.

Does Beer count as dessert? *URP*

No, it's an entree. You still get dessert.

Oh, no, don't even get me started about the eating habits of children these days, argh!!!

I rarely have dessert after any meal any more, let alone after pizza. I eat pizza maybe once a month. R eats it more often but mostly not at my house. If we have pizza at my house she'll eat fruit afterward if she's still hungry, but not dessert (which she eats more often elsewhere, too).

Very often, fruit *was* dessert at my house when I was growing up.

I didn't like pizza until I was a teenager.

You didn't like hotdogs either. I seem to remember you saying you still don't like them, or is that Heather?

I'll eat them, but I'd rather not if I can help it. I used to love eating them until I found out what's in them.

I hated peanut butter and also chocolate ice cream when I was a kid, but I eat them now.

You were a strange child.

Yeah, fruit was and still is often dessert at my house.

At R's last birthday party - the sleepover at her dad's - he provided pizza and soda (aka pop!), followed by ice cream birthday cake! That would not have happened at my house, even for a birthday party.

pizza was such a delicacy when i was young, there was never any room for ice cream. kids these days need a good sound wallop.

I think a wallop would be better discipline than threatening to withold a treat they don't need.

nooooooooooo no desert. I eat three pieces if I am hungry and the rest goes in the fridge to nibble on cold. I don't eat anything else with it because I have to really guzzle the water. I am not used to all the salt, and pizza with all that water on top of it swells me up for a few days.

One of the standard public school lunches in this area is pizza, french fries and a fruit cup (loads of sugar) and it horrifies me.

Pizza *and* french fries? That's more wrong than pizza and ice cream!

Public school pizza horrifies me all on its own.

I agree... fish and chips is bad enough, but who in their right mind comes up with FRENCH FRIED POTATOES to go with pizza??? I think when I was in school (in ancient times) they had corn with pizza. Still a carb, but a carb that isn't fried.

School lunch went to hell when the Republicans made catsup a vegetable. Tomatoes aren't even vegetables.

heheheheh.

I guess it's really no different than preparing macaroni and cheese with hotdogs for your kid's dinner. A couple of cookies afterwards is still dessert.

I don't understand the problem. Why wouldn't you be allowed some ice cream after your pizza? I can see you might not *want* to, but that's different.

Date: 2004-04-27 12:18 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
For a kid, dessert is the sweet treat you get for eating your dinner. For me, pizza is a treat in itself. So why did they have to bribe the kids with something unhealthy to get them to eat something else that is unhealthy?

Date: 2004-04-28 02:04 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] banana.livejournal.com
Pizza is unhealthy? It's just bread, cheese and tomato.

Date: 2004-04-28 11:44 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Lots of grease. Maybe you use less cheese than we do here. And I always have pepperoni on mine.
