From a friend stationed in the Middle East:
Regarding things in Iraq, things are
probably better there than what the U.S. media portrays. We are making
progress. Its hard to say that without minimizing the deaths to U.S. troops
that still are occurring. I've been in country a couple of times and while
I felt the general sense of the Iraqis I came across were grateful, I was
still very cautious and we don't go out without being in full body armor and
well armed. Its a very delicate situation, balancing efforts to stabilize
the country while not imposing western ways which simply is not what the
middle east is about. Its also very hard for westerns to not think like
westerns when measuring progress or success.
