muffler

I left my car at Midas last night to get the muffler replaced. It's only been three years, but the car seems noisy, I've seen exhaust coming from underneath the car, and I used to have to replace it every two years because of all the short trips I do (working close to home has very few of these minor drawbacks). I had to walk to work this morning.

When I got here there was a message to call them. The guy told me that the muffler was fine and didn't have to be replaced.  ??   He said there was a leak in the valve cover gasket, and my air filter was dirty. I let him change the air filter. I figured I'd give him a couple of bucks for his trouble.

I need to take it in to my regular mechanic for some other work, so I'll have him do the valve cover gasket.

I learned that it is a thirty minute walk to work. I've said in the past (repeatedly) that 30 minutes is too long a commute.

I've always meant to get one, but it's not high enough on my list. Probably should be. Maybe next year. I had a scooter, which was nice to ride when my car was in the shop. Good gas mileage, but I hear they pollute worse than a car.

I've never had to replace a muffler. Why does it need replacing after 2 or 3 years? Winter road conditions/chemicals?

If you do only a short trip, the condensation in the exhaust system builds up because the pipes never get hot enough to burn it out. That constant moisture rusts them pretty quickly.
