My mom says we got two inches of rain between 5:00 yesterday and 6:00 tonight. Much of that came between four and five this afternoon. It was pretty nasty out, for a little bit.

First, I noticed where the water had come in on my basement steps, like it does when it rains hard from the west. Then I noticed the window in my sunprch was open - little, if any, damage. Later, I noticed more of my flowerbed has washed away. There are lily of the valley roots lying above the soil. There was almost an inch of dirt at the end of the sidewalk. And teh rain really beat down some of my flowers. Then I noticed how wet it was around my basement window. Crap.

Sure enough - the whole basement was wet. There's a low spot there, which fills up with water, and eventually pours under the window into the basement. Usually this happens at night, and I am able to partially contain the flood, and direct it to the drain. No such luck this time. In fact, there was a bit of a blockage on the floor in front of the drain, and there was water almost everywhere in the entire basement. Then I looked back in teh back corner, and there was over and inch of standing water. I'm glad I checked there. I had plugged the floor drain (for reasons I can't quite remember), so I had to reach through the spiderwebs into the scummy water to take out the plug. I can't complain too much, since I had just cleaned the basement the weekend before last. I can't imagine the carnage there would have been, otherwise. I only lost four boxes (two empty). It was funny when I picked one up, and the water ran out of the cardboard, drawing air into the corrugations - whoosh! I was kind of bummed though, because I had intended to put a couple of those boxes on something, to get them off the floor, but had never gotten around to it. Oh well.

At least the lawns will green up again.

Oh man.. did you sweep up the dirt and put it back? I have to be careful of things washing, and try to shore them up with edgings. Heavy rain is a staple here though. I hope your LOTV does not suffer too much. I love that flower, but cannot grow it here.

No, not yet. There are a lot of the LotV, so it was just a few of them. No big deal.

Yuck...

I'm glad the damage wasn't worse, mister...

Hey, I wanted to thank you SO much for the PJ Harvey cd. Wow is it ever cool!

It stormed again, about 3AM. More water in the basement. This time more seemed to go down the drain, though. Brought some garden dirt with it, though.

I wish there was something I could do about it right now.

So you can walk out of the basement into the garage? That's probably why there's no drain - because they figured it would just run out. Not the best plan.

Is there anything you can do to the grade outside? Slope the ground down more steeply from the house? Install a drainage tile just below grade?

Damn man! So sorry to hear that.... gonna get a sump-pump or other device to clean up the flooding? Or will the drain work, when not plugged?

The drains work fine if they're allowed. The main one just had some stuff piled in front of it, which caused the water to run all across the floor, and accumulate by the other drain, which I had intentionally plugged. First time I'd ever seen water back there. And floor is a bit uneven.

I'm just glad I got most of the stuff off the floor a couple of weeks ago.

our first summer in the new place it rained 10 inches... we lost our carpet, but didn't have to take out any drywall. It would have been OK, if I hadn't readjusted the sump pump cover a few weeks before. Little did I know that it was meant to be off-center becasue of the way it was installed. The cover impeded the travel of the activating rod. Thanks God we have two sump pumps.
