I got a copy of Brazil for Christmas. It's always at or near the top of my best films list, but I never owned it, and hadn't seen it in years. I'm not even sure how long it's been. At least five. Maybe eight. I remember it was the European cut, in a theater.

Anyway, since it had been so long, I wasn't sure how well it would hold up to my memories. I remember being disappointed in Time Bandits after seeing it after a long time had passed. It was still enjoyable, but not good like I had earlier felt it was.

I have always talked about how great Brazil is, so when I was getting ready to watch it last weekend, with my girlfriend who had never seen it before (and who doesn't have exactly the same taste in movies as I do), I got a little nervous. Would it be as good as I remembered? Would I be disappointed? Would Cyn like it?

Yes, no and yes.

It was as great as I thought it was. It still deserves to be at the top of my list.

It is so well crafted - the story, the script, the cinematography. Everything makes sense. There are almost no points in the movie where I say, "yeah, right." Every action sets up the next. The movie is the right length. There are no irrelevant scenes, and (director's cut notwithstanding) no scenes that should have been left in to further the plot. There are scenes that did not directly affect the plot but without exception, they contributed to the feel of the film. Gilliam's visionary genius is reflected in these little scenes and goings on.

I could probably go on, but I'll let you fill in some more.
My complications had a little complications.

Brazil is usually on my list of 5 top films of all time... Definitely on the top 10 list ALL the time...

It's very appropriate now that we are in an era of domestic terrorism where the government is setting up a bureacracy of denial.

Yeah, since I hadn't seen it in so long, the terrorist parts really stood out. I definitely saw it in a different light.
