What happened to the political clout that the retired generation used to have? When I was young, the AARP lobbyists were influential, and every candidate had to do something to appeal to the elderly. I haven't heard anything like that in a long time.

why do you think the republicans are running the country? that group is the most reliable voting block in the system, and they tend to have more money and also to vote more conservatively.

Well, yeah, but I don' thear anything about them anymore. And one of Bush's campaing platforms was privatization of social security, and the GOP hasn't exactly been promising to keep it solvent.

I was talking with a coworker today, whose mother relies on her SS payments and her savings account interest. The Fed is lowering the interest rate again, and she's worried.

Hey, Kev, you like word games and stuff like that, huh?

I was thinking just now of a community called "Two Words" in which every entry could only be 2 words long.

Blueberry Yogurt

I'd start such a community today but my paid account is about to expire and I need to renew soon.

For starters, blueberry yogurt is one of the items I threw out when I was cleaning my fridge last night.

How would you like me to try that game in [livejournal.com profile] onemoreword?

Okay, so you're talking about a community where you can post anything you want, as long as the post consists of only two words?

So then I'd reply to your post of "blueberry yogurt" with "Tombstone pizza."

I could do that. But I think you could do it as well. You don'thave to have a paid account, do you? Oh, do you lose your codes if you expire? Yeah, I can do it. Let me know what you've got in mind.

AARP Aint What It Used to Be

Since the earliest Baby Boomers are now AARP aged, the organization is making a few changes. I'm amused that they now print one magazine for people 50-60 and the other, "Modern Maturity", for above 60. I'd rather get the Boomer AARP stuff, but I'm pegged by my age. I wonder if I could write them and get them to switch me to the other list.

Medicare coverage for drugs and privatizing Social Security are still AARP subjects. The privatization of Social Security is somewhat split with Boomers more in favor of privatizing than Senior Seniors.
(At least they were till the stock marked bottomed.)

I noticed that since the market crashed, Bush hasn't been pushing that privatization thing.
