Here are some articles by Janis Ian, an industry insider who makes a very strong case against the RIAA's case aginst file sharing. They say that it is to the artist's benefit that file sharing be shut down, but she says that it is to everyone's benefit that songs get spread arouind for free. She's got hard data to back up her claims, too.

The first one is the short one.

Does anyone recall the panic the industry was in over home taping?

I agree with Janis....

The movie industry sure isn't suffering because of the proliferation of DVD's and burners.

Exactly.

And WAY back when, those in charge of promoting live musical performances bitched about the whole PROCESS of recording....and of playing recorded music over the airwaves....

I've just read the first of the three articles and I agree with her (I'm sure you're not surprised, heheh). Especially for lesser-known artists, it's simply the most rapid method for widespread exposure.

She did mention that the HUGE artists probably wouldn't sell as many records.
