There have been two crows found in my county that tested positive for West Nile virus. In a neighboring county there were two horses that died of it, one of which was a short distance from where my sister lives. A few days ago, a man died of the virus in Madison - the first fatality in the state.

I'm not worried about this issue. Think of how many mosquitoes there are in your area, then think of how few actually carry West Nile virus. Your chances of getting it as similar to your chances of dying in a car crash or even as slim as winning the lottery (okay, a scratch-off game!).

I wouldn't say I'm worried, exactly. But people have died, and that sucks.

The worst has passed us I think.. several years ago, and we have settled into a steady level. Sadly it is about five people who die a year from it, and the bird population has been decimated. I miss the blackbirds.. and yes, even the starlings.

Just before all this started with the West Nile virus being talked about on television and in the papers, I'd found a dead crow in my yard. I just picked it up in a plastic bag and threw it in the trash.
