"Sustaining that spirit of volunteerism and unity is crucial to defending the freedoms America holds dear. "
From the CitizenCorps website

Funny, when Clinton suggested that we Americans needed to volunteer ourselves, he was ridiculed. But now the Bushies are suggesting it? Why is that?

Do they suddenly realize how bad off the government is and that it really does need all thehelp it can get?

Did they percieves Clinton's directive as aimed at them, but now that they're in charge, they don't have to participate?

Are they starting up this call for volunteerism, to gain support for their faith based crap?

I'm worried about the McCarthyism slant on much of what the government is doing now under the guise of patriotism. I wonder how this new volunteerism is connected with that.

I lived thru the first McCarthyism when I was too young to vote but old enough to care a whole lot. I agree that it's scary.

"faith based crap" You named it. My church has a good sized building left over from the 50s when the congregation was three times as large. They have been renting out a portion of it to Craig Montessori. When the contract was up for renewal they changed the wording of the contract to say that all religious symbols needed to be removed from areas common to the church and the school.

The church had already put up draw drapes to cover a large picture in the hall and removed any pictures or stuff from the two rooms Craig used. The discussion seemed to focus on a few light fixtures that had a cross on top of the fixture. They were high up and when I asked about it they had to be pointed out twice before I found them. I would have removed the crosses. Who saw them anyway? No one used the light fixture, fixed 6 and a half feet up, for religious meditation. The majority of the church felt strongly that they were not going to give in any more. So they didn't sign the contract.

My main reaction was to think, "And this is just the kind of silliness you get into with 'faith based initiatives'." It sounded so good to the religious right, who supports Bush.

That was silly, but I side with the rest of your church. I'd only go so far to accommodate them, before I told them to hit the road. Let them find out what their silly demands got them.

Right on Kevin, great post. I think I will 'volunteer' down at my local Democratic Headquarters?!

no, they have no idea how bad off the government is, yes, they want any/all support they can get--if they had REAL faith--that is, faith based on anything except the power of the dollar, they wouldn't have to use the doublespeak and doublethink techniques they do...PB

Yeah, but that doesn't matter much because anyone with faith will see that their faith is being supported and will vote.
