I don't think I ever got my federal tax refund. Is anyone else missing theirs? Was the rumor true, that that asshole in charge is holding our money?

What happens if my check got lost? Do I have any recourse in getting the money?

"If you file a complete and accurate tax return and you are due a refund, your refund will be issued within six weeks from the date we receive your return. "

Bullshit! If you file on April 15th, you will NOT get your refund in seven weeks (allowing for the mail). Never have, never will.

Did you talk to a human?

No, I checked the website, and it asked for too much info from my tax return (stuff I didn't know, so I couldn't prove I was who I said I was), so they just gave me the general FAQ.

Oh, so you can check later. Maybe my mom can give you a Milwaukee number to call for Taxpayer Service.

I know I didn't get one, and I thought I was supposed to...

If the check got lost, as long as no one else cashed it, they send another check. This happened to me one year.

"The System"

This is how it is supposed to work. When returns are received in the Service Center all those with checks attached have the checks taken off, cashed, and the returns are put "in a pile" somewhere :^) while all the returns asking for refunds are processed. This is because the govt has 6 weeks to process your return without paying interest. Most refunds after that are sent with interest.

If you don't get your refund in that time you can call the IRS, give them info from your tax return and about you, and they will check your account on the computer. If the refund was sent out and cashed, or if it was sent out and got lost in the mail, or some otherunfortunate thing, IRS will send you a Form 3911 and use that to trace the check. Tracing generally takes a long time. That's why I try to have my refund as small as possible.

If something happened you don't know about, that meant there was not actually supposed to be a refund, they can tell you. If you don't agree with the things they're telling you, tell them why, tell them what backup information you can send to support your case, and ask that they solve the problem. They can't just say "no". If they do, call again to get someone else, or ask for a supervisor or ask for it in writing. If they quote a law or rule that you wonder about, ask them to tell you where it can be found so you can look it up yourself, or get a copy. Contrary to what "some books" say, yelling, threatening, making nasty comments or such is MUCH less likely to lead to success than courtesty, cooperation, and persistence.

I haven't been at the IRS for about two years and things change, but I called a friend to check on the current procedure. One more thing--everyone gives his/her name and ID number at the beginning of the call. Good idea to write it down. I did this with an insurance company once and when I called back I said "I talked to xxxxx and he said xxxxxxx". The current helper said,"He's kind of new, maybe he needs some help with that" and straightened it all out. I have certainly thought that sentence when a taxpayer called, and took some action.

Thanks.

I think the important parts will be whether the check was sent and whether it was cahsed.
