I mowed the lawn this morning. It was the first time in three and a half weeks. I don't remember how long it was before that - at least two weeks. The grass didn't really need it, but the weeds were going to seed, so I wanted to get them cut off. There was one patch of grass that is green and needed cutting. Some more was rather brown, but I don't think I hurt it by mowing. I skipped the back part altogether. There are few weeds back there, and it the grass was just too short to bother with.
I hope I didn't hurt it by mowing. Half of the front yard was short enough that I almost skipped it, but I decided to go ahead and cut it. I see people (usually old people who have nothing better to do or who are just too set in their ways to stop) who insist on mowing twice a week whether it needs it or not, but that can be deadly to your grass when it is dry. I've seen lots of short dead lawns. My dad’s father-in-law compliments my dad on how green his lawn is in this drought. He asks him how he does it, and he says, "I don't cut it!" but the old man continues to mow his lawn anyway.
The dandelions are flourishing in my yard, with their taproots. The plantains were getting very big, but are starting to die off. The creeping charlie is almost gone (I didn't think I'd live to see that). Most of the violets in the lawn have disappeared. Most of the rest of the weeds are doing well.
