When I got into work on Monday, there was a bright yellow piece of paper on my desk, with the words, "I love you mom." Since I'm nobody's mother, I figured it wasn't for me. Kim sometimes brings her six year old daughter here for a while on friday afternoons, and she sometimes plays with the typewriter. So I figured she was poking around my desk, and she just left it lay. I left it on Kim's desk.

I asked her about it today, and she said that Hannah left them on several desks. Kim thinks that she intended for people to give them to their mothers. I decided that since it is my mother's birthday today, I would do just that.

Very sweet. Happy birthday, Mama Freekee!

Um, you have a real *typewriter* at work?

Yeah, in purchasing and in shipping. They both use those shipping requisition forms that are made up of seven different coloerd sheets that you can type or write on and your signature goes through to all the sheets and then all the interested parties can get a copy.

We happen to have a typewriter, too, that actually does get used for various purposes. They're relics these days, though.

We still have a couple of typewriters in this office too. We use them for shipping labels, file folder labels, etc. There are even still typewriter repairmen! That has to be a slow job these days.

I had to write by hand with a pen the other day. I'd nearly forgotten how. The only practice I get is phone messages on post-it notes.

cursive and such

Maybe they keep them for the oldsters like me. ;) Although I rarely use ours except for maybe a quick envelope or something.

My brother, sister, and brother-in-law all got their B.A.'s from Northwestern back in the 70's. I enjoyed several visits there as a teenager. I particularly remember the undergrad library with all kinds of comfortable seating, complete with headphones, ahhhh!

Yes, but it's usually so short. It was long sentences that have to read sensibly that seemed hard: so many words! And the rediscovery of things that once seemed so familiar, like having to plan ahead because there's almost no chance of editing pen and ink. I was never a letter writer, but I could fill pages and pages in a three hour exam. I'd find that harder now.
