I made myself sit through the Who's Tommy. I've never liked it much, but I'm not sure I've ever heard it all. Now I have. I have no desire to hear it again.

Quadrophenia is one of most favorite records. I think the reason I dislike one and love the other is because Tommy is essentially a musical soundtrack, whereas Quadrophenia is a rock record with a story. I know Tommy was written as a rock record, and only later became a Broadway play and a movie, but it doesn't sound like it. Quadrophenia is just a damn fine collection of songs that happen to tell a story.

I must mention that Townshend's acoustic guitar playing on "Pinball Wizard" is really great. And I like a couple of the songs on Tommy, but none that I really go out of my way for.

the only who album that would go into my desert island collection is who's next. both tommy and quadrophenia i enjoy listening to occasionally, but who's next moves me.

Quadrophenia moves me at least as much as Who's Next.

I forgot - did you ever see The Who live?

Yes, twice. I saw them in '98, and it was the best concert I have ever been to (tied with U2's ZooTV tour). They played Quadrophenia straight through. I was amazed by the energy that the band projected.

Oh, yeah, now I remember.

They're one band that really *must* be seen live to get the total effect.

And you didn't go see them last week!

But I've already seen them, so I know.

Are you going to hold a grudge about this? :P

And you skipped Jethro Tull!

Just look what you're doing to me!

But I saw them too, in the 70's!

You just met me too late, that's all. And it doesn't help one bit that none of my local friends are real rock & roll fans.

I don't think I've ever even heard The Who Sell Out.
